Reliance backed Jio, which officially introduced its ‘Welcome Offer’ in the market in September this year, is extending the validity of its offer for three more months, till March 2017. According to reports, this has been done to aggressively meet the 100 million subscriber target. Analyst Motilal Oswal commented on the change of plans, saying “Mass scale free welcome offer could continue until March 2017 to attract subscriber growth towards the celebrated 100 million mark with RJio’s indicative data pricing at Rs 130-140 per gigabyte (GB).”

The news has been declared after jio commented that it may extend the time period of its free services may be extended if the telecom subscribers won’t be able to get the perfect experience of seamless internet connectivity. Interconnection congestion and poor quality service parameters proved a major benchmark in internet connectivity as per the Jio management.

However, as per the order released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), no telecom operator can offer a promotional offer for more than 90 days (Telecommunication Tariff Order, 2004). Hence, Jio’s promotional free offer is permitted only till 31st December 2016 and cannot extend its offer beyond that date. But customers joining the telecom network will continue to enjoy the benefits till December 31, 2016, as informed by Jio itself. Another analyst, CIti Research commented on the Jio offer, saying “If the situation with the points of interconnect pertaining to voice calls persists with the incumbents, then they will look at innovative solutions to ensure that users do not pay unless the quality of service improves.”

Jio’s Strategy and Planning head Angshuman Thakur said on Thursday that Jio would not need permission from TRAI to extend their free services beyond December 2016.

Reliance Jio recently touched a whooping 16 million customers on its network in less than a month, and have successfully locked horns with top telecom companies like Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and Vodafone.
